A GI Tag for a Handwoven Mat: How Kannadippaya and Bharat Tribes Fest Are Redrawing the Map of Craft Recognition
A Kerala tribal handicraft just got the kind of formal legal recognition usually reserved for a region’s tea or textiles. It’s part of a wider push to put tribal craft economies on firmer ground.

In April 2025, Kannadippaya — a traditional handwoven mirror-and-mat craft made by tribal artisan communities in Kerala — received Geographical Indication (GI) status. It's the same category of legal protection more commonly associated with regional foods and textiles, now extended to a craft historically undocumented and economically precarious outside its own community.
The GI tag is one piece of a broader institutional push around tribal craft recognition. Bharat Tribes Fest 2026, organised by TRIFED (the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India) and scheduled for March 18–30 at Delhi's Sunder Nursery, is built to give tribal artisans and craft communities from across the country a national retail and exhibition platform — the kind of direct market access that a GI tag alone can't provide.
The two moves work at different levels: a GI tag is a legal and reputational foundation — it says a craft's name and origin are protected. A national exhibition and sales platform is the commercial layer on top of that foundation — it's what actually gets a Kannadippaya weaver's work in front of a buyer willing to pay a fair price for it.
Legal recognition tells you a craft is real. A market tells you whether it can survive.
